ParasiT is a project supported by the CasDAR through the French National Programme of Agricultural and Rural Development (PNDAR) in order to create alternative means of defense against fruit-boring caterpillars of walnut and chestnut by using egg parasitoids.
Nut orchards represent the second-vastest plantation of France and they share several specific challenges of cultivation such as high canopy, difficulty of access, and a relative lack of efficient treatments against insect pests. Lepidopteran pests are a particular danger in the context of climate change which increases the number of generations per year and facilitates the arrival of new species.
The goal of the project ParasiT is to contribute to the development of alternative means of defense against two walnut pests (Ectomyeloïs ceratoniae et Cydia pomonella) and three chestnut pests (C. splendana, C. fagiglandana et Pammene fasciana), via the identification, rearing and introduction of native oophagous parasitoids of genus Trichogramma.
