Sinds 2017 wordt Placemaking-onderwijs aangeboden bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Het Placemaking-onderwijs aan de UvA is uitgegroeid tot een programma bestaande uit (keuze)vakken op bachelor- en masterniveau, een Summer School, afstudeerplekken en stages die aangeboden worden op UvA-locaties, waaronder: Universiteitskwartier, Roeterseiland, Science Park en UMC locatie AMC.
Studenten analyseren hun eigen campus(omgeving). Ze gaan in gesprek met wetenschappers, buurtbewoners, overheid en organisaties en gebruiken hun wetenschappelijke kennis om samen de gebieden te verbeteren.
Door een meerjarige samenwerking tussen de UvA, gemeente en lokale partners, bouwt ieder semester een nieuwe groep studenten voort op het betreffende gebiedsdossier. Kennis en inzichten worden verankerd in het gebied, ook nadat studenten het vak hebben afgerond. Studenten geven na afloop het stokje door aan de volgende groep en spelen een rol bij het opzetten en vormgeven van de nieuwe projectfase.
