Listen to every article on the web, just like listening to podcasts or audiobooks. Playpost, an app from Dutch app developer Jordy van den Aardweg, does exactly that. Playpost transforms articles on the web into audio using artificial intelligence to create natural-sounding audio within seconds. So it sounds like a real person reading to you, without the need to wait for a real person to narrate the story to you.
“There are so many writers and bloggers publishing interesting stories on the web every day, but I think everyone can relate to not having the time to read them all”, says Jordy. “I’m a big fan of audiobooks and podcasts, which you can listen in the car while commuting to work, making the trip useful. But not every article is available in spoken format. Now it is.”
Playpost allows you to make better use of your available time by listening instead of reading. Listen while commuting, walking to the grocery store or when working out. You don’t need to sit down and read anymore. You can just put on your headphones and press play.
The app uses DeepMind’s WaveNet technology, making the voices sound as realistic and natural-sounding as possible. This is currently the best available technology to transform text into speech. Now in the hands of everyone.
When the app is installed, a share option is added to every supported app on your phone, including your browser. Just browse to an article you like and press the Playpost share icon. The app will extract just the title and the article contents out of the website for you to listen to. All that is left is to press play and listen to the article.
Playpost has 240 different voices to choose from for 28 different languages, including English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and many more. You can customize the experience by choosing a voice you prefer for easy listening. Support for more languages will be added in future updates.
The app is available for free in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
