Project BEST (Building Excitement for Science and Technology) is an organization dedicated to providing students with education, enrichment, and a joy for learning and understanding the exciting science and technological advances happening around us. This is achieved through interactive programs, workshops, chapters and a unique entrepreneurship aspect that fosters an interest in innovation. Based on the three pillars of Knowledge, Discovery, and Experience, Project BEST creates and drives curiosity in students everywhere. At the middle school level, our hands on and interactive workshops helps create curiosity in the STEM subjects. For example, one of our lessons teaches the basics of magnetism through Magnetorheological Fluids (MR fluids) which in essence are fluids that are liquid in normal state but turn into a solid when a magnetic field is applied. We would teach students about MR fluids and magnetism in general, before giving them the opportunity to make their own MR fluids and discover its properties by themselves. This is followed by a discussion on MR fluids’ application in the real world and what research is required to learn more. Lessons such as these will help bring excitement and curiosity about science and technology to a young mind. The high school level is very unique as well, as it is being run by high school students with our support. Here students in their individual high school chapter give presentations about new science and technology news, lead discussions on how things work (applying concepts learned in the classroom to new technologies), have an opportunity to hear guest speakers, participate in interactive workshops, and take part in science competitions across the nation that truly challenge their critical thinking. A unique entrepreneurship aspect helps integrate the worlds of business and science, and gives students the first step in bringing new discoveries to the world.
