Die Puhl Foundation wurde im Jahr 2015 ins Leben gerufen. Der zugrunde liegende Wunsch war es, zu teilen und anderen Menschen zu helfen. Auch wollen die beiden Stifter Oliver und Alix Puhl andere zur Nachahmung anregen.
Stiftungszweck sind die Förderung von Chancen und der Ausgleich von Nachteilen bei Kindern, Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen einschließlich ihrer Familien.
Im Juni 2020 nahm sich eines der vier Kinder der Stifter, Emil, mit 16 Jahren das Leben. Emil litt am Asperger-Syndrom und einer hierdurch zuletzt stark verschärften Depression, was zwei Monate vor seinem Tod diagnostiziert wurde.
Die Lehren aus dem Leiden Emils prägen seitdem die Arbeit der Stiftung in bedeutendem Maße. Dabei stehen die Suizidprävention und die Früherkennung psychischer Erkrankungen sowie die Hilfe für Betroffene im Vordergrund. Unterstützt wird dies durch Projekte zur Verbesserung der institutionellen Voraussetzungen im Schulbereich.
Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Stiftungsarbeit ist die Unterstützung von jungen Künstler:innen während ihres Kunsthochschulstudiums und im Anschluss daran.
