As an independent public health consultant, the primary services offered are in training students on leadership in health management, poverty reduction, and behaviour change communication. Additionally, the lifetime experience in these areas is used to write books. Two books were published and others are on the way.
Currently I am a consultant to a large NGO primarily involved in micro credit related activities. This organisation has around 2 million women members in their Self help Groups (SHG) and around a million men members. These members are part of a self sustaining network under the broad umbrella of the lead organisation.
One of the unique aspect of this federated network of SHGs is the manner in which they heve come togethe rto establish a network health care institutions both at the primary and secondary care levels. It is owned by the community. they take turns in rortaing membership representation in the Board. Professionals form the lead NGO provide leadership support.
Besides they are also involved in community health services. Some federations of SHGs have obtained external funding for specific projects and then when the funding is stopped they manage the follow up with their own funds.
The major intervention has been in anaemia control among pregnant women and adolescent girls in their project areas. At present theywork with over 200,000 girls.
Another major area has been on environmental sanitation through the construction of individual household latrines. Over half a million projects such toilet construction, drinking water facility etc have been carried out by these groups.
Besides this large NGO I am also on the Board of a smaller NGO as its secreatary. This NGO works in slect interior villages where education facilities ar elimited. They are supported in hostels in nearby b towns and bigger vilages with good government schools. The children botyh boys and girls are
