REDcert wurde am 26. Februar 2010 von führenden Verbänden und Organisationen der deutschen Agrar- und Biokraftstoffwirtschaft gegründet.
Seit über 10 Jahren liegt die Kernkompetenz von REDcert in der Konzeption, dem Aufbau und der Bereitstellung von Systemen zur Nachhaltigkeitszertifizierung für unterschiedliche Branchen. REDcert bietet derzeit zwei Systeme zur Nachhaltigkeitszertifizierung an - REDcert-EU und REDcert².
Das REDcert-EU System ist bereits seit 2012 von der Europäischen Kommission anerkannt und mit mehr als 1.500 Teilnehmern aus über 25 Länder, eines der führenden Zertifizierungssysteme für nachhaltige Biomasse, Biokraftstoffe, flüssige Biobrennstoffen und Biomasse-Brennstoffe in Deutschland und Europa.
In den vergangenen Jahren konnten neue Geschäftsfelder generiert werden. Mit dem Systemangebot REDcert² ist REDcert seit 2015 auch ein verlässlicher Partner für die Nachhaltigkeitszertifizierung in der Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelbranche sowie der chemischen Industrie. Nachhaltigkeit ist kein neues Thema in der Chemiebranche aber aktueller denn je. Das REDcert² System eröffnet den Unternehmen der chemischen Industrie hierbei neue Vermarktungsmöglichkeiten und verbessert ihren Marktzugang. Zudem können sie mit dem REDcert² System einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Minderung von Treibhausgasen und zur Schonung von Ressourcen leisten.
