Refvik Tech was created out of necessity and frustration. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2009 when my mother's last request was for me to get a physical shortly after her last few days of battling cancer. I had spent the previous few months of her illness driving to upstate New York from Brooklyn as often as possible, fueling up with soda, coffee, and candy. I wasn't sleeping enough, and the effects of stress were apparent. A physical, I reasoned, would probably do me well, even though I expected a clean bill of health.
My blood test showed elevated blood sugar levels, but I considered them a fluke. It was recommended that I have more tests done. The third test results showed that my blood sugar had gone from 330-580 mg/dL, and my A1C levels were 11.3. My doctor was in awe that I was standing in front of him with a confused look on my face, "I feel fine!" I told him.
I had always known diabetes was in my foreseen future. I had part of my pancreas removed from a sporting accident as a teen. I just hadn't expected to be diagnosed so quickly and so young, in my 30s. Nor did I expect to be handed a test kit, log book, and a two-page "instruction" pamphlet at the hospital and then released. I thought my life was over. I didn't understand what was happening and why it was happening to me. I did my research throughout the learning process, met with countless others experiencing the same issue, and continued trying multiple products available on the local pharmacy shelves. But, unfortunately, none of these items made life any easier!
It was then that I had the AH-HA moment to create "The SugarCube Mobile App" —
