Retroplast blev udviklet i 1984 af Cand. scient Erik Christian Munksgaard på Tandlægeskolen i København sammen med tandlæge Jørgen Rud.
Materialet er siden starten blevet fremstillet i Danmark og primært brugt af danske tandlæger. Retroplast adskiller sig fra andre retrograde rodfyldningsmaterialer ved at være baseret på adhæsiv teknik. Der behøves således ikke en præpareret kavitet for at anvende materialet. Dette har sine fordele idet at tænder med lange rodstifter eller parietale perforationer, uden besvær kan forsegles med Retroplast. Alle aspekter af den endodontiske kirurgi kan dækkes med dette materiale.
Metoden kræver ingen særlige anskaffelser for at komme i gang. Der kræves blot en let hulning af området, som ønskes forseglet, med et stort rosenbor.
Undersøgelser af Retroplast har vist succesrater op til 90% som er på højde med MTA og er dokumenteret i adskillige artikler gennem tiden.
