When Resident Eva watched the Austin roller girls zip around the track and send their competitors flying, she knew she was in the wrong place. She was skating around her Rochester neighborhood alone. She belonged on the derby rink. “I feel I was born to play this game,” says Eva. When no one else created a local league, Eva did it herself. It took Eva nearly three years but she and friend Emmeline Spankhurst finally got Roc City Roller Derby private practice space in 2008. In less than a year the league has grown to 40 dues-paying skaters. “I remember feeling satisfied that we had 25 or so players by summer of 2008,” says Eva. “I didn’t think it was a big deal, but other leagues thought it was amazing! We’ve doubled our numbers since then, so we must be doing something right.” Members come three times a week to play from all over Monroe and Ontario counties. We are graphic designers, graduate and college students, journalists, daycare providers, retailers, security consultants and therapists who help adults and children with speech, socio and chemical dependency challenges. Some of us are moms. Many of us grew up watching derby on TV and wanted to make up a cool name, lace up and play.
