The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) has been unchanged for 30 years and is associated with many injures to operators, in particular crush injures to hand and fingers trapped between the falling weight and the anvil.
The Safety Scala differs from the conventional version in that the anvil is fully enclosed by the hammer, meaning the risk of finger injuries is eliminated. The Safety Scala has shown significant improvement to the original design and is much safer for operators. In addition to eliminating the risk of crush injury’s the Safety Scala reduces the load on operators backs by reducing the amount the operator has to bend over during the operation of the Safety Scala, as such reducing the risk of back injuries.
The Safety Scala complies with the New Zealand Standard: NZS 4402 Test 6.5.3:1988 for Dynamic Cone Penetrometer testing; in fact, it has weight and drop height tolerances far in excess of the standard. The product is manufactured here in Christchurch by industry leading engineering firms.
Testing in New Zealand and Australia demonstrates minimal differences between the Safety Scala and a conventional Scala Penetrometer. Any differences are insignificant in comparison to variations in ground conditions across small distances.
