Der ehrenamtlich geführte Verein Sagittaria setzt sich seit 1988 für den Schutz des Atlantik-Urwaldes, dessen Biodiversiät und die Existenzgrundlage der Indigenen Mbyá ein.
In der Nähe der weltberühmten Iguazú-Wasserfälle befindet sich einer der letzten Atlantik-Urwalde. Er gehört zu den artenreichsten und ältesten Wäldern der Welt. Zum Schutz des Regenwaldes und der Mbyá kauft Sagittaria mit Hilfe von Spenden in der Provinz Misiones – im nord-östlichen Zipfel Argentiniens – Regenwaldflächen, um sie der Abholzung zu entziehen. Den wertvollen subtropischen Regenwald gibt Sagittaria anschliessend den einstigen Waldnomaden Mbyá zurück. Das über Jahrtausende alte Volk versteht sich als Teil der Urwaldorganismen und lebt sorgsam mit ihnen im Einklang: «Wir sind Teil des Waldes und der Wald ein Teil von uns.» Das indigene Volk erhält so nicht nur ihre Existenzgrundlage zurück, sondern lebt als Teil des Urwaldes und schützt das Gebiet vor Abholzung sowie die einmalige biologische Vielfalt. Mit der Rückgabe der Atlantik-Urwaldflächen an die Mbyá ist der subtropische Regenwald auf lange Zeit geschützt.
