Durant l’été 1997, Thierry d’Aubreby décédait d’un cancer, à l’âge de 31 ans, après quatre années de combat. Depuis lors, ses amis, avec le soutien de ses parents, continuent le combat qu’il a mené contre la maladie, en aidant les jeunes cancéreux par des actions concrètes. En 2006, leur association a pris la forme d’une ASBL, baptisée «Les Amis de Thierry».
Outre le caractère bénévole de l’ASBL, sa particularité réside dans le fait que les sommes récoltées sont investies à 100%, sans qu’aucun frais de gestion ne soit imputé. Tous les 2 ans, l’ASBL organise un grand tournoi sportif dans les installations du Royal Racing Club Bruxelles, l’incontournable « Salut Thierry », suivi d’un dîner de gala et d’une soirée, afin de récolter des fonds pour lutter contre la maladie.
