Sirene was founded in 2014 with conductor Volkan Akkoç’s initiative. With the motto “Our voice echoes from the distant seas”, Sirene makes reference to the mythical and alluring Greek creatures the “siren”s. The dynamic, brave, and free spirit of the Turkish woman is strongly present in the choir’s fusion of western and Anatolian musical elements. Sirene’s aim is to perform choral music, especially contemporary living composers and Turkish choral music, to their best ability and to introduce the Turkish women’s choir repertoire to the world. In 2015, Sirene had the chance to work with French conductor Michel Laplénie and Sagittarius Vocal Ensemble within the scope of 29th International İzmir Festival and performed the world premiere of Turkish composer Ahmed Adnan Saygun’s “Duyuşlar”. In 2016, Sirene presented pieces from Turkish women choir repertoire in Mediterranean Choral Forum organized in İstanbul and coordinated by European Choral Association. In 2017 Sirene competed in 10th International Johannes Brahms Choir Festival in Germany and won two golden diploma in Folklore and Chamber Choir/ Vocal Ensemble categories. Sirene also awarded two of the jury’s special prizes “Outstanding Performance of Contemporary Choral Music” and Akkoç was awarded “Conductor Prize”. In 2018, Sirene won two golden diploma at the 8th International Robert Schumann Choir Competition held in Zwickau, Germany, in which the choir was also honored with the "Jury Special Award" for their outstanding performance of Robert Schumann's “Tamburinschlägerin”. Sirene continued to actively take part in the international choral platforms in 2019 and successfully represented Turkey in the 4th International Baltic Sea Choir Competition in Latvia, where only 9 choirs from around the world were accepted. In addition to returning with the “Audience Award” from Latvia, Sirene received praise from the world-renowned jury members of the competition.
