The St. Louis Astronomical Society (SLAS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit established in 1936. Its mission is devoted to the interest and advancement of the science of astronomy. With over 200 members, SLAS is the largest astronomical society in the metro St. Louis area in Missouri. SLAS: 1. Provides access to the night sky to thousands of people every year through our outreach events. 2. Has a regular schedule of public events at a variety of parks around the metro area. 3. Hosts free monthly meetings at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. SLAS encourages people of any age to learn about astronomy. The general meetings are free and open to the public, and feature a guest speaker who is typically a professional researcher in Astronomy or an Astronomy-related field. These meetings provide an opportunity for visitors and those with questions about amateur astronomy to talk informally with the members. SLAS is governed by an Executive Council which operates under the society's Constitution and by-laws. This council (or "The Board") has established a number of committees to support the society's operations.
