Small Places is a 501(c)3 that develops urban farms in communities of limited food access to upend systemic inequalities at the neighborhood level. In 2014, Small Places began their first urban farm called "Finca Tres Robles" (Spanish for "3 Oaks Farms") in Houston's historic 2nd Ward. Founded as an LLC on a short-term lease, they turned a 1.25 acre vacant lot into a productive community green space producing over 20,000lbs of produce a year with an expressed goal of keeping 100% in their community. More than just a food factory, "Finca" is a vital part of the East End community. In recognition of their ongoing community impact, Harris County entered into a partnership with Small Places to move the farm 1 block to a larger 1.5 acre site for 40 years to allow them to triple their impact and support long-term systemic change in their community food system. Small Places fully transitioned to a 501(c)3 in May 2022 and launched their capital campaign in October of 2022 to raise $2.7 million dollars to develop the first of many Small Places' farms. The new "Finca" will include a grocery store, classroom, and pavilion to provide the best farm experience for their deserving neighborhood.
