SmartMicroOptics Srl (SMO) is a startup of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT); the mission of SMO is to open the doors of the microscopy to everyone, with different levels of performance and of technical complexity.
As in every good microscope there is a carousel of objectives, each one addressing a specific group of applications, SMO wants to provide a full set of objective lenses for smartphone and tablets, ready to use for everyone; a line of smart and affordable accessories for connecting the standard photography to the microscopy, using every smartphone.
Blips is the trademark of the first product of SMO.
With its crowdfunding campaign of 2016 on Kickstarter, Blips has become a product known all over the world. The Blips kits of lenses were sold in over 100 countries, and over 5,000 backers (in 45 days) helped the project come to life. Its applications in the medical and technological fields helped Blips in being purchased by many universities and research centers. Blips immediately demonstrated its great application possibilities in the educational field, too: it soon was adopted by many Science laboratories and classes from schools of any level, all over the world.
