An all-volunteer educational NPO founded in the US in 2014, works to promote sustainable living through the use of renewable energy sources. Its origins date back to Dr. Thomas H. Recognizing biogas, at all scales, as the “solar plexus of the Food/Energy/Water Nexus”, Solar CITIE’s mission is to share their biogas education program in ever increasing locations in the U.S. and abroad, teaching people how to convert organic “waste” into valuable clean cooking fuel and nutrient dense fertilizer through the simple process of biodigestion. SC has implemented projects in the US, as well as Belize, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Egypt, Haiti, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Palestine, Peru, Portugal, Spain Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and more. In many regions SC offers home-scale biodigestion as an alternative to wood fire cooking that causes disease and deforestation. Current urgent project requests include Nepal and Ukraine. Partnering with Pennsylvania Alliance for STEM Education, National Geographic, Energy Vision, Public-Private Alliance Foundation, Solar Cookers International, and the Université Notre Dame d'Haiti, SC adds biogas education to K-12 schools and universities that complement their programs and community outreach efforts. SC shines light on individuals/companies developing and marketing residential and community scale systems. Two companies that have grown out of SC’s global group include HomeBiogas (Israel) and Flexi Biogas (Kenya). Finally, we partner in research, particularly cold weather solutions.
