Sophist – A class of teachers who instructed in writing, rhetoric and speech in Greece around the 5th century BC. Sophism preceded Aristotle and Plato and is based in part on knowing what is needed in a particular framework or more simply, knowledge of one’s audience. Sophists believed that knowledge could be taught to all and was not, as Plato and Aristotle believed, just for the privileged few.
