Sporting Liberties represents the sports clubs of Dublin’s South-West Inner City. We have one purpose. To deliver playing pitches and sporting facilities for the 8500 children of Dublin 8 who, disgracefully, have no playing pitch or green space to play organised sport.
The area experiences significant problems with drug related crime and anti-social behaviour. The outlook for children who grow up in certain pockets of The Liberties is stark. We have one of the highest levels of suicide in Ireland for young females, crime rates are alarming, and a disproportionate number of prisoners in the criminal justice system come from the area. The opportunity to participate in organised sport is critical for child development and wellbeing, and for improving outcomes for children and young people in the area.
We are urging Dublin County Council to act now and deliver a 140 metres long X 100 metres wide multi-sports pitch at Marrowbone Lane, Dublin 8 site to include GAA, Soccer and Rugby, by January 2026 at the latest. The Council Development Plan 2022-2028 already provides for mixed use development at the Marrowbone Lane site, including playing pitches.
We are also calling on the Council to take whatever measures necessary to expedite the delivery of the playing field in Teresa’s Gardens, Dublin 8
These two sites will give our community a mere 10% of the green playing space which is available in towns across Ireland.
Our local representatives must work with the Dublin City Council CEO and Executive to deliver this as a matter of urgency.
