StAMINA, the Student Alliance for Mental Health Innovation and Action, is a network of passionate students driving the movement to improve youth mental health. We built StAMINA after being perplexed by a simple thought: if you wouldn’t hesitate to ask for a bandaid for a cut, or go to the doctor for a cough, why is it so hard to talk about mental health? We were inspired to spark this movement after realizing that, no matter how well-intentioned, our communities and schools couldn’t tackle mental health as effectively as the students who live through it every day. So we’re here to break the barriers that prevent us from even bringing up the words “mental health.” We’re here to raise awareness for what mental health really is, and what it means. We’re here to connect student advocates and adult allies into a powerful network capable of making real change. To pursue these goals, we’ve embarked on a research study in partnership with the University of Louisville to better understand mental health from a youth perspective, an angle that’s been all but ignored in the academic realm. We’re hosting a series of Youth Summits across Kentucky to challenge students our age to start and change the conversation around mental health. And we’re taking decisive action, tackling legislative challenges, building our website as an evolving resource and safe place for youth, and much more.
