In 2022 bestaat Enschede Marathon 75 jaar. Daarmee is het de oudste marathon van Nederland én West-Europa. Met jaarlijks ruim 11.000 deelnemers aan de start van de verschillende afstanden is het een van de grootste hardloopwedstrijden van Oost-Nederland. Eliud Kipchoge - 's werelds snelste marathonman - liep in 2021 in Enschede tijdens de NN Mission Marathon een racerecord in 2.04.30.
Het Enschedese parcours neemt na Rotterdam, Amsterdam en Eindhoven de vierde plek in van snelste parcours in Nederland. Deelnemers kunnen langs de verschillende routes en in het stadscentrum rekenen op zo’n 80.000 supporters. Jaarlijks maken de 950 enthousiaste vrijwilligers het marathonweekend tot een groot succes. Door hun (jarenlange) ervaring dragen ze in belangrijke mate bij aan het neerzetten van een succesvol en geslaagd topsportevenement.
Aan de eerste Enschede Marathon op zaterdag 12 juli 1947 namen 51 lopers deel. In die tijd werd de marathon iedere twee jaar georganiseerd. Sinds 1991 keert de marathon jaarlijks in april terug.
