People who suffer from tinnitus come from all age groups and walks of life. Most studies show that approximately 15% of the general population experience chronic tinnitus, with 1-2% suffering severe distress, emotional impact, and societal consequences from the condition, including suicide.
Military personnel are especially vulnerable, as evidenced by tinnitus being the #1 most prevalent disability affecting American military Veterans. THREE million Veterans received a VA disability award for tinnitus in 2023, resulting in direct costs of over 6 billion dollars. This doesn’t even account for lost productivity reduced quality of life.
Tinnitus sufferers live in communities all over the world: in major cities, in suburbs, in rural towns, and on military bases. However, these communities typically lack providers with the knowledge to evaluate and treat tinnitus using evidence-based methods of care. We aim to build a network that connects tinnitus patients, clinicians, researchers, and social systems to each other, and also to resources of tinnitus information. These connections will allow us to identify what treatment options are working best, and for which types of patients.
Existing learning health networks (LHNs) are multisite, practice-based clinical networks which engage patients, clinicians, and researchers. They collect data embedded in clinical practice, and then use that data to improve care and to guide research into better solutions at scale. This network approach is a systemic solution to reach underserved individuals, measure effectiveness of interventions, prompt needed research, and rapidly translate research findings into better standards of care for patients, including reducing the variability of care between clinical care providers using quality improvement (QI) and performance improvement (PI) techniques.
Creating a Tinnitus Learning Health Network (TLHN) represents a systemic shift from the current siloed healthcare system for tinnitus.
