The Maritime Human Factor Centre (MHFC) is a pioneering institution dedicated to the advancement of maritime safety through a focus on human factors and innovative technologies. Established in 2022 under the leadership of Prof. Osman Turan, the MHFC has become a hub of excellence in maritime research. Our multidisciplinary team comprises leading academics, PhD students, Post-Doctoral Research Associates (PDRAs), and research assistants, all committed to mitigating human-induced challenges in maritime operations.
Our research areas are diverse, ranging from Human-Centered Design and Human Reliability Assessment (HRA) to Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Risk Modeling, and Safety Assessment. We employ cutting-edge facilities like the NTPRO-500 Full Mission Bridge Simulator and the VRLab, equipped with advanced eye-tracking and EEG devices, to conduct groundbreaking research and training programs.
We have been instrumental in several high-impact projects, including SAFEMODE, which aims to enhance safety in both maritime and aviation sectors by focusing on human risk-informed design. Our MarEd project is developing a distance learning tool to train maritime staff in energy efficiency, while the SEAHORSE project is transferring proven practices from air to marine transport to enhance safety.
Our mission is to address the knowledge and skills gaps within human factors and support the maritime industry towards achieving safer and more efficient human operations. We aim to attract high-quality researchers and students, develop research-informed MSc programs in Maritime Safety, and generate quality research output that will inform and motivate the next generation of human factors researchers globally.
