Subalterno1 is a design gallery located in the former working-class district of Lambrate in Milan. It acts as a research laboratory and a showcase on the new scenarios of independent Italian design. The space activities aims to discover new design talents as well as to collaborate with established independent Italian designers (like Massimiliano Adami, Carlo Contin, Antonio Cos, Lorenzo Damiani, Paolo Ulian, Fabio Bortolani). Since 2011 the gallery promoted and curated several exhibitions that have highlighted a critical design approach to technology, human behaviors and manufacturing processes. Architect Andrea Gianni is the founder and gallery director. Stefano Maffei, associate professor of the Polytechnic of Milan and scientific director of Polifactory, is the main curator.

Subalterno1 nasce a Milano, nell’ex quartiere operaio di Lambrate, come laboratorio di ricerca sui nuovi scenari del design indipendente italiano. Lo spazio, oltre ad andare alla scoperta di nuovi talenti, collabora in modo continuativo con i più noti designers italiani, tra questi Massimiliano Adami, Carlo Contin, Antonio Cos, Lorenzo Damiani e Paolo Ulian. Dal 2011 le mostre curate e prodotte da Subalterno1 hanno evidenziato un approccio critico del design nei confronti di tecnologia, comportamenti umani e processi manifatturieri. Principale promotore di Subalterno1 è l'architetto Andrea Gianni, Stefano Maffei, professore associato del Politecnico di Milano e direttore scientifico di Polifactory, ne é il principale curatore.
