Sinds 2000 werkt Cobraspen Vastgoedontwikkeling BV aan de herontwikkeling van SugarCity. Het hele gebied wordt nieuw leven ingeblazen: het wordt een megacomplex met ruimte voor kantoren, horeca, een casino, een hotel en een outletcenter.
SugarCity kiest ‘actieve vrije tijd’ als thema
Zoals ook al opgenomen in de eerste plannen van SugarCity, zal er op het voormalige terrein van de Suikerfabriek Holland in Halfweg een volume van ongeveer 108.000 m² aan nieuwe functies worden gerealiseerd. Deze nieuwe functies komen deels in nieuw te realiseren gebouwen, maar deels ook in de al bestaande gebouwen met een industriële uitstraling. Wel is de soort functies dat gerealiseerd gaat worden in de afgelopen jaren – onder druk van de economische recessie – aangepast. Zo zijn de kantoren (grotendeels) en de mega-bioscoop uit de plannen verdwenen en is het thema “actieve vrije tijd” er voor teruggekomen.
Belangrijk uitgangspunt hierbij is het behoud en herstel van waardevolle bestaande industriële gebouwen in het gebied. In het stedenbouwkundig plan wordt een rijke mix aan functies voorgesteld zodat er een levendig gebied ontstaat dat vrij toegankelijk is voor iedereen.
