De SViR is er om haar leden waardevolle ervaringen te bieden tijdens de selectieve master Informatierecht aan het Instituut voor Informatierecht. Er zijn twee elementen die het fundament vormen van de vereniging.
Academische gemeenschap – Ten eerste vormt de vereniging de academische gemeenschap buiten de collegebanken. Met de academische gemeenschap wordt bedoeld het collectief aan studenten, docenten en onderzoekers aan het IViR. Toch vooral moeten de leden de relaties onderling kunnen cultiveren binnen de vereniging. Het is een selecte groep, die hetzelfde doel nastreeft en in het kader van de studie vaak moet samenwerken in groepsverband.
Bedrijfsleven – Ten tweede creëert de vereniging een link met het bedrijfsleven door de leden een vollediger beeld te geven van wat het bedrijfsleven na de studie kan bieden.
