SWESEM, eller Svensk Förening för Akutsjukvård, är akutläkarnas specialistförening. Det innebär att SWESEM är fullvärdig medlem och sektion i Svenska Läkaresällskapet och specialitetsförening i Sveriges Läkarförbund. Vi verkar för ökad kvalitet i akutsjukvården och för att främja forskning och utbildning inom akutsjukvård.
Föreningen startades ursprungligen 1999 i samband med ett nationellt möte i akutmedicin i Uppsala. Initialt var föreningen associerad till Svensk Internmedicinsk Förening med avsikten att inom några år bli en självständig förening för att företräda specialiteten akutsjukvård. I samband med årsmötet 2002 togs beslut om att bilda den nuvarande föreningen, Svensk Förening för Akutsjukvård (SWESEM) dvs en fristående förening för utövare av akutsjukvård. Föreningen deltar sedan 2005 i European Society for Emergency Medicine (EuSEM) och sedan 2006 i den globala organisationen International Federation of Emergency Medicine (IFEM).
