In 2007, Seven Cups changed its strategic goal to focus on helping other small tea businesses. To that end, we were granted a Chinese export license. We started to accumulate customers, first in Europe and then Brazil, Mexico, Canada, and Australia. Ironically, our American customers were primarily specialty coffee companies.
We knew the biggest issue for small companies that wanted to distinguish themselves from their competition by providing quality products was sourcing. We wanted to share access to our tea makers not only to help them but also our customers. We help you navigate the difficult Chinese supply chain, and make minimums small enough for even the smallest company to afford. You also need quality control and relatively stable prices.
To sell quality products, you need to establish authenticity through transparency and supply enough factual information to justify the price customers are paying. We are and want to remain a small company, so we had restrictions at first. We only sold teas that we bought ourselves, even though our producers make a lot more tea with prices both cheaper and even more expensive. We also didn’t sell domestically to online only companies.
Because we are just a year away from being in business for twenty years and have a high level of trust in our producers, and because we have developed infrastructure in China that has successfully weathered even the past year’s challenges, we have decided to relax these restrictions. That allows us to broadly increase our offerings. We are starting with 30 Chinese producers and one Indian, and will expand this list when we can travel again to Sri Lanka, Nepal, Africa, and Japan.
All of our tea is directly sourced from its makers. That has given us an advantage during the Covid-19 pandemic. Our supply chain kept moving throughout 2020.
We have launched a new brokerage tea website to support our efforts. We invite you to visit it and browse our wide selection of tea offerings now available.
