’The Cornfield Project’ in Coleraine won the public vote to become the Grow Wild flagship site for Northern Ireland.
The project has received funding to transform and develop an underused area, between two communities, into an engaging, exciting space that will benefit local residents by bringing people together with wild flowers.
The Cornfield site is an underused patch of land situated between the communities of Millburn and Ballysally in Coleraine. The Cornfield Project aims to tackle issues of low employment and health by creating activities which will increase people`s confidence, enable them to develop new skills and bring opportunities for fun and education.
TCV has taken on to do the bulk of the work to develop the Cornfields site and work started in March, when local young people were involved in planting trees and shrubs. In the coming weeks we will be adding more features to the Cornfields site including sensory gardens, outdoor classroom, youth hang-outs, allotment area, woodland areas, wildflowers, bird and bat boxes, nature zone, barefoot walk and loads more for everybody to participate in and enjoy.
The aim is to make this a space for everyone - early years, children, young people, adults and older people will find something that interests them and connects them with nature – this is for local people and those for further afield.
The Cornfield project is being developed by Aspire Community Partnership – a local consortium of grass-roots community groups who are working together for the benefit of the Causeway area and is funded by Grow Wild and Kew Gardens.
