De bibliotheek verandert. De traditionele boekenkast wordt een dynamische ontmoetingsplek. Een plek waar mensen kennis en inspiratie vinden, waar mensen zich kunnen blijven ontwikkelen. Een plek waar mensen geholpen worden om mee te kunnen blijven doen in de samenleving.
Maar niet alleen de bibliotheek verandert. Onze levens veranderen. De grens tussen de online en offline wereld vervaagt snel. Waar we nu nog ‘op’ het internet gaan, gaan we in de toekomst misschien zelfs wel ‘in’ het internet. Als bibliotheek bewegen we mee. Juist omdat in de online wereld volop mogelijkheden liggen om nog toegankelijker te worden en om onze maatschappelijke opgaven (zoals beschreven in het Bibliotheekconvenant) nog breder en beter te vervullen. Daarom bouwen we aan The Third Space; een virtuele bibliotheekomgeving die zich blijft ontwikkelen.
Acht bibliotheken zijn in samenwerking met The Alignment House gestart met een omvangrijk project om de transformatie naar een hybride bibliotheekdienstverlening te realiseren. Het project met als titel ‘Van Third Place naar Third Space’ (hierna: The Third Space) heeft als doel om het bereik van openbare bibliotheken en interactie met en tussen inwoners te vergroten. Fase 1 en 2 van dit project zijn mogelijk gemaakt door een genereuze bijdrage van Stichting PICA.
