The Healthy Eating Initiative (HEI) is a nonprofit organization (501(c)(3) status pending) dedicated to addressing the national obesity epidemic with preventative health education at the K-5 level. The HEI employs a “for the community, by the community” model through the use of The HEI Nutrition Education Curriculum (NEC), a systematic and reproducible approach to teaching essential, evidence-based nutrition principles to K-5 students. The NEC is a proprietary tool developed by The HEI using publicly available information from The Nutrition Source, a food and nutrition knowledge guide based at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health’s Department of Nutrition. The HEI recruits and trains teams of high school students in the implementation of The NEC in local elementary schools through on-site workshops.
