Don’t let the company name fool you: ThomasLehman Design|Build|Make. I am not that formal; call me “Thom.” I use the formal name because I like the graphic better for the company; otherwise, it reminds me of when my mother was upset with me. For years, I pursued the American dream the way I thought I was supposed to: learn a skill, get educated and get a job. The bottom portion of my LinkedIn profile demonstrates in spades how I did that. Somewhere along the way, my personality got lost and my creativity was subverted to a career that felt more like a job than a calling. In Lancaster County, where I hail from, the Pennsylvania Dutch have a saying, “To soon olde and too late smart.” That’s me. At 50-something, I finally got smart, not by will but by circumstance, and started my own company. I am now pursuing the American dream, aligned with my specific calling, in a way that work and family life are integrated to a degree I previously only dreamed about. Explicit in the company name is that I like to design, build and make things. I provide design and build services; I make products that can be purchased. If you know any artistic/creative types like me, you may understand that “making” is the compulsion to fabricate something--anything--that allows the artist to get something out of their head and into a physical reality that they can hold, look at and enjoy. For me that compulsion works out in sketches and drawings mostly, but also works out through building, furniture and lighting pieces that I make. My company is focused on anything related to the built environment (property, home, small commercial) and encompasses my passion for art, architecture, design and construction.
