美国排名前十的大学，无不拥有一支规模庞大、管理出色的捐赠基金，为大学的长期发展提供了强有力的财务支撑。而中国高校的捐赠基金无论从管理规模和管理能力上仍处于起步阶段。同济大学教育发展基金作为基石投资人，通过投资同济校友基金，与校友共同参与到私募股权市场，开启了中国高校教育发展基金保值增值的新的探索。
稳健而可持续的投资是同济校友基金的首要考量。为避免规模过大而带来的投资压力及相应风险，同济校友基金以小步快跑的方式，首期基金基金规模控制在5亿人民币，不接受社会资本，其中来自同济大学教育发展基金的投资将占基金规模的20%，另80%的投资来自于积极参与并认同本基金价值观的部分校友。他们与母校教育发展基金会共同成为了首期基金的基石投资者。积跬步以至千里，同济校友基金将根据整体经济周期的发展状况以及储备项目等投资机会的不断积累，逐步提升基金的管理能力和规模，陆续对更多校友开放投资机会，包括对高质量的社会资本和优异的金融机构的引入。
