Turkoois is een not-for-profit sociale onderneming waarin twintig medewerkers en vrijwilligers samenwerken in een werkgemeenschap voor doven. Turkoois is een divers bedrijf, gecentreerd rondom het gebruik en de promotie van de Nederlandse Gebarentaal (NGT).
NGT is de voertaal binnen ons samenwerkingsverband waardoor er een werkomgeving ontstaat waarin mensen zich prettig voelen en zich kunnen ontplooien. Zo voelt iedereen wat de betekenis en de waarde is van een omgeving die daadwerkelijk toegankelijk is voor doven.
Daarom is het ook de missie en de kern van Turkoois om overal in de samenleving de toegankelijkheid van zoveel mogelijk informatie voor doven te bevorderen door middel van NGT-vertalingen. We vinden dat doven het recht hebben om belangrijke informatie te ontvangen in Nederlandse Gebarentaal. Niet alleen omdat het Nederlands meestal de tweede taal van doven is, maar ook omdat dit bijdraagt aan inclusie van en begrip voor de dovengemeenschap als geheel. NGT is wettelijk erkend sinds 1 juli 2021. Dat sterkt ons in deze overtuiging en ons streven om het meest vooraanstaande vertaalbureau voor gebarentaalvertalingen in Nederland te zijn.
Naast vertalingen houden we ons bezig met het creëren van oplossingen. We zetten projecten op en voeren deze uit. Turkoois is partner en/of penvoerder van verschillende projecten in Nederland en Europa. De tools die we met andere partners ontwikkelen, implementeren we in Nederland. Zo zijn we heel trots dat we 1 oktober 2022 Luhu hebben geopend in Groningen. Dit is de allereerste horecagelegenheid in Nederland die gerund wordt door doven.
