Het Departement Fysica maakt deel uit van de Faculteit Wetenschappen van de Universiteit Antwerpen en ziet het als zijn taak om een maximaal wetenschappelijk resultaat te realiseren door het creëren van een stimulerende en dynamische omgeving. Het departement streeft naar het verzorgen van uitstekend academisch onderwijs, zowel in de studierichting fysica zelf als in andere studierichtingen waar vakken in de fysica gedoceerd worden.
Daarnaast hecht het departement zeer veel belang aan het uitvoeren van kwaliteitsvol onderzoek, waarbij een evenwicht beoogd wordt tussen enerzijds theoretisch en experimenteel onderzoek, en anderzijds fundamenteel en toegepast onderzoek. Verder is ook het aspect maatschappelijke dienstverlening zeer belangrijk voor het departement.
Het programma van de opleiding fysica is nauw verbonden met de onderzoeksdomeinen van de onderzoeksgroepen van het departement. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is het Engelstalige master programma in fysica, dat bijzondere aandacht besteedt aan fenomenen die zich voordoen op nanometer schaal.
