umnandi’s mission is to provide young South Africans with practical knowledge and motivation to pursue entrepreneurial projects that benefit their communities. umnandi is a project initiated by students of Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship (CSE) in collaboration with Engineers Without Borders South Africa (EWB-SA). umnandi’s vision is to inspire and empower young South Africans, who are passionate to make a substantial difference in their society and their own lives. umnandi provides them with practical tools to identify opportunities, evaluate possibilities and use their means to make a change. This way, umnandi enables the youth to find practical solutions to problems that they otherwise deemed unsolvable. umnandi intends to achieve this goal by conducting entrepreneurial workshops that teach enterprising concepts and address existing issues in disadvantaged communities. Two inaugural workshops will be held in Johannesburg and Cape Town in April 2017. The workshops will introduce fundamental concepts around teamwork, idea generation, lean development and more. They will encourage students to see their environment from a new perspective and enable them to recognise and to take on solvable problems that they previously took for granted or considered unchangeable. The workshop will also introduce a case based on an issue in the local community. The students will be divided into groups and tasked to develop solutions to the problem and pitch their idea. These solutions may serve as input for projects conducted by Engineers Without Borders South Africa. For the future, umnandi seeks to develop the concept further, involve more partners and expand to other cities.
