Good urban design allows people to pass by safely, efficiently, and in pleasant surroundings, directly creating value. Good urban design also creates value indirectly by enabling people to create value for others through free exchange. We are concerned with the cities hardware; we are also interested in the software — with what people do in the city.
The most important thing that people do in cities is exchange things — goods and services, but also ideas, knowledge, and love — with other people. Exchange depends on proximity; moreover, proximity is the business of cities.
Connectedness and proximity are necessary conditions for economy, culture, and community, but they are not the only conditions, and they are certainly not sufficient – nor do we entertain nostalgic yearnings for the supposed golden age before cars, motorways, television and Tesco. We do consider a reasonable and practical hope that these and other features of contemporary culture can be integrated into a coherent web facilitating many kinds of exchange and preserves not just the sense of community but the fact of it. That is our guiding principle.
The city is a technology and a mode of communication.
We do not believe that the communitarian city of human contact is obsolete. Advertising slogans notwithstanding, a phone is useless if you want to reach out and touch someone, or something. Face-to-face contact is qualitatively different — indeed, even quantitatively different, measured in terms of the bits of information exchanged — from any foreseeable form of virtual communication. Face-to-face contact is what the city as a technology is designed to achieve. A personal life nor an economic life can detach from the community life. There is creative energy in the well-formed city that cannot be duplicated by other technologies, however powerful and brilliant and liberating they may be.
