De Vlaamse Vereniging Voor Psychoanalytische therapie zet zich actief in voor het levendig houden van het psychoanalytische gedachtengoed in Vlaanderen en daarbuiten. Ze behartigt de beroepsbelangen van haar leden en vertegenwoordigt deze tegenover overheden, zorgverzekeraars en andere nationale en internationale beroepsverenigingen.
De VVPT is aangesloten bij de Beroepsvereniging voor Wetenschappelijk onderbouwde Psychotherapie (BWP) en bij de European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (EFPP).
De psychotherapeuten (psychiaters en psychologen) van de VVPT putten uit de ganse breedte van het psychoanalytisch gedachtegoed binnen het klinische werk. Hun aanbod ontplooit zich binnen een diversiteit aan kaders, zoals face à face, short-term, groepspsychotherapie, speltherapie en klinische psychotherapie. Ze richten zich bovendien tot de meest diverse vormen van psychisch lijden en dit zowel bij (jonge) kinderen als bij volwassenen.
De vereniging verzorgt bijscholing en vorming, wetenschappelijke bijeenkomsten en studiedagen, intervisie en supervisie.
Ze is ook een van de participerende verenigingen van het Tijdschrift voor Psychoanalyse en haar Toepassingen.
