AVV is de vakbond die is opgericht om de polder te moderniseren: als het gaat om de inhoud van cao's, democratisering van de cao, nieuwe sociale zekerheid en het toekomstbestendig maken van het pensioenstelsel.
AVV is in 2005 opgericht om de tweedeling op de arbeidsmarkt tegen te gaan, de tweedeling tussen hen die wel zekerheid hebben (insiders) en hen die in onzekerheid werken en leven (outsiders).
De tweedeling tussen insiders en outsiders op de arbeidsmarkt is het meest manifest bij zzp'ers. AVV vindt dat zzp'ers ook deel moeten kunnen nemen aan het sociale zekerheidsstelsel.
AVV is cao-partner in onder andere de retail, bloemen, kunsteducatie, zelfstandige klinieken, maar ook bij ondernemingscao's.
Het grote verschil met andere bonden is dat AVV ook niet-leden laat stemmen over de eigen cao. Ook betrekt AVV niet-leden bij de totstandkoming van een cao.
Leden van AVV zijn dat in de eerste plaats omdat ze de doelstelling van AVV ondersteunen, daarnaast kunnen ze individueel advies krijgen over zaken die met werk te maken hebben. De contributie bedraagt slechts 25 euro per jaar.
