Vedanta - The term "Vedanta" means "the conclusion of the Vedas," encompassing the ideas that emerged from the Upanishads, focusing on either devotion or knowledge and liberation. (Veda means knowledge or learning, and "anta" means ending or conclusion.) The Upanishads are the essence of the Vedas, comprising the knowledge part of the Vedic texts. They are also referred to as Vedanta, since they constitute the final section of the Vedas. The word "Veda" implies learning, so the term Vedanta can also describe the totality of all knowledge. A person who has read, comprehended, and internalized the Vedas has attained their objective. There are four Vedas in total: the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda. These four Vedas are comprised of four sections: Samhita, Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and Upanishads - the conclusion of knowledge in the Vedas. The last part of the Vedas is called the Upanishads, which are the essence of the Vedas. The Sanskrit term Upanishad originally meant "sitting near a teacher," from "upa" meaning "by" and "ni-ṣhad" meaning "sit down," referring to the student sitting down near the teacher while receiving spiritual knowledge. There are 108 main Upanishads (summaries from the four Vedas) that were orally taught or discussed with the students of the Vedas. The breakdown of the number of Upanishads from each Veda is as follows: Rig Veda (10), Sama Veda (16), Yajur Veda (51), and Atharva Veda (31)
