Op 22 april 1939 werd de vzw ‘Vrienden van het Scheepvaartmuseum’ opgericht. Doel: het stichten, het behoud en de uitbreiding van een specifiek scheepvaartmuseum in België. Het Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum 'Het Steen' sloot in 2011 de deuren. 'Vrienden Nieuw Scheepvaartmuseum' ijvert nog steeds voor een volwaardig scheepvaartmuseum.
De band tussen het Museum en ‘de Vrienden’ was een en ondeelbaar. Gedurende bijna 70 jaar werden alle verworven stukken (schenkingen, giften en aankopen) verworven door de Vrienden automatisch gedoneerd aan dit Scheepvaartmuseum. Hierdoor groeide het museum al snel uit tot een volwaardig ‘Nationaal Scheepvaartmuseum’.
