Taidemuseon takana virtaava Lasaretinväylä oli aikoinaan tärkeä voiman lähde, johon vuonna 1720 perustettiin vesimylly. Arkkitehti Viktor Joachim Sucksdorfin suunnittelema Myllytullin vesivoimala otettiin käyttöön 1903, mutta 1960-luvulla Lasaretinväylän vesivoimala hiljeni.
Tulipalo vaurioitti vanhaa rakennusta pahoin elokuussa 2006 ja alue oli pitkään sortumavaaran takia aidattu ja näin ollen ihmisiltä suljettu.
Keväällä 2017 Hartela-Forumin kunnostamaan voimalaan avattiin taide- ja tapahtumatila Voimala 1889 Whatever Groupin toimesta. Yhtiömuutoksen myötä vuoden vaihteessa 2018 syntynyt Voimala 1889:n Oy tarjoaa nyt tilassa ammattitaitoisia juhla -ja ravintolapalveluita.
Voimala1889 on Oulun uusin, inspiroivin kulttuuripainotteinen juhla- ja tapahtumapaikka, joka toimii myös taidegalleriana. Tila toimii erinomasesti kokousten ja yleisötilaisuuksien järjestämiseen. Tarjonnassamme myös viihtyisät saunatilat rennompaan illanviettoon.
Voimalan ja Rauhalan väliin valmistui kesällä 2017 myös tapahtumatori, jossa järjestetään kesäisin patiokeikkoja.

The space is excellent for organizing meetings and public events. We also offer a comfortable sauna section for more casual occasions. An event plaza was built between the Voimala and Rauhala venue’s during the summer of 2017.
