VOISS and iKNOW are development and implementation research projects through the University of Kansas, Special Education Department, and the Center for Research on Learning. iKNOW is the next generation of VOISS. iKNOW will build upon VOISS. iKNOW is a computer-based extended reality experience. Students will be able to move through multiple school-based environments (e.g., classroom, bus, hallways) while being immersed in social stories. Students will interact with avatars in social situations where they need to problem solve interactions. As they react and respond to situations, iKNOW offers explicit feedback on student decisions, reflecting on the appropriateness of the decision and how to potentially problem solve in the future. iKNOW is designed for iPads, Google Chromebooks, laptops, and soon, wearable virtual reality devices.
In addition to the student virtual world, iKNOW is also developing a teacher professional learning platform that supports the implementation of virtual reality in the classroom and the student generalization of virtually learned social competency skills to the physical world. Formerly known as VOISS Advisor, iKNOW TOOLS will advise educators and families on how best to use extended reality experiences and how to support students to transfer the skills they learn from technology into the real world.
