Leerlingen in de regio Almere verdienen de mogelijkheid om te kiezen voor Voortgezet Vrijeschool Onderwijs. Daar zet het initiatief VVO Almere zich voor in. Almere heeft op dit moment één Vrijeschool voor basisonderwijs sinds 1981, De Vrije School Almere. Er is veel belangstelling voor de school, die zich sterk maakt voor een harmonieuze ontwikkeling van de leerlingen, met aandacht voor “hoofd, hart en handen”. De Vrije School Almere is een grote, groeiende, gezonde basisschool op drie locaties in Almere.
Na de basisschool moeten kinderen die kiezen voor Voortgezet Vrijeschool Onderwijs naar Amsterdam toe. Vanuit Almere reizen er dagelijks 75 leerlingen naar de Vrijeschool VO in Amsterdam. Deze school groeit de laatste jaren zo sterk dat ook daar een wachtlijst is, en er veel leerlingen worden afgewezen en uitgeloot. Landelijk is er een groei van het aantal leerlingen dat naar een Vrijeschool gaat; bij het Voortgezet Vrijschoolonderwijs is dat meer dan 10% per jaar. Het Vrijeschool Onderwijs trekt enorm aan.
