I’ve been writing all my life, but I didn’t truly learn to write until I started teaching writing. In 1995, I founded Teaching That Makes Sense, Inc., to provide professional development and consulting for teachers and direct instruction for K-12 students in writing, reading and other areas. In 2003, I began teaching and coaching adults and young writers outside of school. The two paths crossed in my book, Be a Better Writer, which won multiple awards and earned acclaim from writers young and older.
For me, writing requires tolerance for ambiguity; it’s not a right-or-wrong endeavor. There are, however, two things about which I’m absolutely certain: 1) writing is the most important thing to learn in school and in life; and 2) learning to write well changes our lives and the lives of people who read our work. That’s what matters most.
