About Peggy Karr, founder of Peggy Karr Glass
I started Peggy Karr Glass in 1987 in my Morristown New Jersey home. I was a self-professed “Starving Artist” and supported myself with odd jobs by day, while developing my craft by night.
I had previously worked with both stained glass and ceramics when I discovered a vintage piece of kiln fired glass and was intrigued with the thought, “How did they make this?” I then started putting some of my own stained glass into my ceramic kiln and never looked back.
Unique Process
1. Each piece of glass is hand-cut before decorating
2. An artist hand-sifts the colored powder onto the glass using one of our many stencils
3. The artist then places a second layer of glass over the design
4. The decorated glass gets loaded onto a mold in our kiln
5. The kiln then fires the glass at about 1600°F, which melts the layers together and causes the glass to take on the shape of the mold
6. Finally, all of the plates are engraved with our studio initials and the year it was produced
