کانون مردم نهاد محیط زیستی- دانشجویی زامیاران (ثبت شده در وزارت ورزش و جوانان) در بهمن ماه 93 به همت جمعی از دانشجویان دغدغه مند و دوستدار محیط زیست که در دانشگاه های شهر تهران مشغول به تحصیل بودند، بنا نهاده شد.
زامياران به معني ياران زمين ، نامى كهن در فارسى باستان و تركيبى از دو واژه زام و ياران مى
باشد كه خود كلمه زام در زبان فارسى پهلوى به معناى زمين مى باشد. بسياري از واژه هاي مرتبط چون زَم ، زَميك ، زَمى ، زِري و زِمي و .... نيز وجود دارند كه به ترتيب در زبان ها و گويش هاى اوستايي ، پهلوي لكي كردي لري خراساني و اصفهانى به معناى زمين به كار مي روند.
واژه "زمى" با استناد به قاعده قلبي در ادبيات پارسي كه در آن به منظور سهولت در تلفظ و زيباسي فتحه به الف تبديل مي شود با حفظ معنا به كلمه زام تغيير صورت داده است.
