Het media-platform Zeilhelden is ontstaan nadat het boek Zeilhelden het licht zag. Het boek is een compilatie van de twintig belangrijkste Nederlandse zeilers van de twintigste eeuw. Althans volgens de auteur Jules Bänffer, die zich liet souffleren door Hans Zuiderbaan (Stichting Zeiltrophy) en Elisabeth Spits (Het Scheepvaart Museum). Het boek werd een website en de website werd een online media platform voor grensverleggend, buitengewoon of persoonlijk zeilnieuws.
Zeilhelden is al jaren het enige niet op de mainstream zeilmedia georienteerde zeilmedium. We brengen vooral eigen content via internet (website en facebook), selecteren ook info uit blogs en vlogs die er toe doen en zijn ook aanwezig op een beperkt aantal zeilevenementen (radio en youtube). Daarnaast experimenteren we ook met oude en nieuwe media-vormen als podcast, periscope, webstreamur en steller.
Zeilhelden bestaat uit een clubje media-professionals die lol hebben in hun werk en graag buiten spelen.
