中投公司下设三个子公司，分别是中投国际有限责任公司（以下简称“中投国际”）、中投海外直接投资有限责任公司（以下简称“中投海外”）和中央汇金投资有限责任公司（以下简称“中央汇金”）。
中投公司的境外投资和管理业务分别由中投国际和中投海外承担。中投国际和中投海外均坚持市场化、商业化、专业化和国际化的运作模式。
中投国际于2011年9月设立，承接了中投公司当时所有的境外投资和管理业务。中投国际开展公开市场股票和债券投资，对冲基金、多资产和房地产投资，泛行业私募（含私募信用）基金委托投资、跟投和少数股权财务投资。
中投海外于2015年1月成立，是中投公司对外直接投资业务平台，开展直接投资和多双边基金管理。
中央汇金根据国务院授权，对国有重点金融企业进行股权投资，以出资额为限代表国家依法对国有重点金融企业行使出资人权利和履行出资人义务，实现国有金融资产保值增值。中央汇金不开展其他任何商业性经营活动，不干预其控参股的国有重点金融企业的日常经营活动。
中投国际和中投海外开展的境外业务之间，以及与中央汇金开展的境内业务之间实行严格的“防火墙”措施。
